About Me

Dr. Max Craig Kusovitsky DSW, LCSW, ADV CASAC II, is a psychoanalyst and Doctor of Clinical Social Work. Max completed his doctoral research at New York University as well as his Master’s degree at Yeshiva University, simultaneous to his license in substance-abuse treatment. Dr. Kusovitsky currently works as a (neuro)psychoanalyst in private practice.

Since beginning his formal, psychoanalytic training at the Karen Horney Clinic in 2016, Max has completed his two-year, psychodynamic certificate fellowship. To date, Max has also completed seven years of post-grad/post-doc, psychoanalytic training at The American Institute for Psychoanalysis among other psychotherapeutic institutions.

Dr. Kusovitsky’s practice focuses upon wholehearted, psychoanalytic treatment, evangelizing the therapeutic benefits to understanding unconscious forces within the lived experience of subjective mental life.

His current research draws from the interdisciplinary domain of neuro-psychoanalysis. In particular: affective neuroscience, complex systems theory, global work-space theory and the free energy principle. It is these areas that substantiate the phenomenology of consciousness itself, as well as its corollaries to the psychoanalytic principles underpinning perception.

This comprehensive perspective operates in service of developing an integrated sense of self for the patient, where interior experience invariably has MEANING, FUNCTION and causal POWER. It is the emphasis on liberating strangled volition and compromised agency that benefits patients and students alike, helping Dr. Kusovitsky to mobilize improvements in post-graduate/post-doctoral training and psychotherapeutic treatment. Simply put: our interior lives are meaningful and capable.

Max currently teaches and supervises in this technique, highlighting the leading edge of psychoanalytic and phenomenological research and its application in the treatment room.

When not on or near the proverbial treatment couch, Max can be found on his more characteristic soapbox, preaching grandiloquent gospel at stilted listeners on Twitter or podcasts. Dr. Kusovitsky remains a patient himself, attending psychoanalysis multiple times per week in service of clinical efficacy and constructive, personal work.
